Background
Texas suffers from an acute lack of parkland for outdoor recreation and
protected wildlife habitat. Sprawling urban development and rapid population
growth make the need to acquire additional parkland for people and wildlife
all the more critical. In order to meet the outdoor recreational needs
of people and ensure the survival of wildlife our state decision makers
must make the acquisition of new parkland and protection of ecologically
sensitive lands a top priority. Citizens must communicate their support
for additional parkland and habitat protection to our state government
officials. The most important thing we can do now is to educate our elected
and appointed officials as well as the general public about the growing
need to protect our state's valuable open spaces for people and wildlife.
The key state decision maker in achieving more open space protection in
Texas is the Governor. In all states that have made a strong commitment
of funds for land conservation, a key factor in achieving that goal
was leadership by the governor of the state. He has the ability to pursue
significant increases in funding through the Texas Parks & Wildlife
Department for the acquisition of new parkland and to protect wildlife
habitat. With more funding directed this way, additional land can be acquired
to provide more outdoor recreational opportunities and conserve wildlife
habitat. In order for this to become reality, it is critical that citizens
such as you communicate the demand for more parkland and protected habitat
to our Governor.

lack of parkland for people and wildlife. Let the Governor know that you

wildlife habitat a top priority for his administration.
