Mercury, a potent neurotoxin, falls in our lakes and rivers making some fish unsafe to eat.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has warned pregnant women and any woman who might want to become pregnant to avoid or limit fish consumption.
In-utero exposure to mercury can cause severe mental retardation, cerebral palsy, deafness, blindness, and seizures.
A University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio study released April 30th found autism prevalence correlates strongly with proximity to mercury-emitting coal-burning power plants and other industrial sources of airborne mercury.
Every year from 2000-2006, Texas has ranked #1 in the nation for mercury emissions and seventeen bodies of water in our State are currently under Fish Consumption Advisory from the Texas Department of State Health Services due to mercury contamination.
