Dr. Elliot Trester, MD with Physicians for Social
Responsibility warns against poisoning ourselves
with sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, particulate
matter, mercury, and carbon dioxide from power plants
burning coal.
We need
your help to Stop the Coal
Rush - to stop 19
dirty coal plants planned
in Texas!
Across the nation, political, scientific, environmental and
religious leaders and organizations are becoming
more and more vocal and active on the growing
problem of Global
Warming. Large utility companies oppose those
efforts by proposing to build
19 dirty coal-fired power
plants in Texas.
We believe that with a strong and vocal opposition
from all quarters of the State, our Texas State
Legislators meeting in Session at the Capitol
in Austin will do the right
thing and pass House Concurrent
Resolution HCR
43 calling for a moratorium
on these coal plants.
Building these dirty coal plants would mean an additional
124.5 million TONS of carbon dioxide,
the principal global warming gas being spewed into
the atmosphere. Texans deserve Clean
Air and Smart Energy Solutions available now. We must stop this
irrational coal rush to disease and disaster!
The Sierra Club has brought together over 30
Organizations (that number keeps growing!) to lobby the Texas
State Legislature for a Coal Moratorium. We are
asking you to attend the Stop
the Coal Rush Rally & Lobby Day at the Texas State Capitol
on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 pm, Feb. 11 - Monday, Feb.
12!
Next... bring your friends, family, neighbors, and organization
members! The more people the better! :-)
For more background information,
a Schedule
of Events,
to register to attend, to volunteer, or to
make a donation to help sponsor our neighbors
traveling from other counties in Texas, please
visit the website:

[Note: This is the first of TWO
environmental lobby days during this session, the Alliance
for a Clean Texas Lobby Day is February 25 & 26
- we hope you an make both!]
Thank you from the Staff and Volunteers of the Lone Star
Chapter of the Sierra Club!
Other Ways to Stop the Coal Rush:
Get together your community of friends, family, colleagues
to do any of the following:
ASK your Texas State Representative and Senator in person
at the Capitol
visit their district office in your town, or
ASK them in writing for a Time Out on these
dirty coal plant permits!
Find out 'Who Represents Me?'
on the Texas
State Legislature Online website. (Type in your street address and zip code to get their mailing info.)
Texas State Legislators have the power to call for a
Time Out!
We are asking you to ASK them to pass a Joint
Resolution for a Coal Moratorium:HCR3 filed in the House
by Waco-area Representative 'Doc' Anderson -
asking the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality
(TCEQ) to halt a hurried, unsafe and unfair permitting
process. The Time Out will allow time for TCEQ scientists
to adequately assess the cumulative health impacts of
these proposed dirty coal plants and will allow time
for our state to consider cleaner, cheaper, safer alternatives.
ASK your mayor and other local elected officials to speak
publicly on the impacts of state energy choices on YOUR
community. Get involved with the Sierra
Club Cool Cities campaign!
Send letters to the editor and comments on local blogsites.
(TV news programs and newspapers are hosting
blogsites for local communities.)
Distribute information online or on paper to your church,
neighborhood association, local political organization,
PTA or other group. BE SENSITIVE! Ask permission to hand
out literature, and keep postings to listserves brief.
Send interested folks to www.stopthecoalrush.com for
more information or for ways to fax decision makers,
download facts sheets, and to take more action!
