Hike
on Caney Creek
August 2 (Sat) - On Saturday, August 2, 2008, the
Houston Sierra Club will conduct a hike. Bring lots of water, lunch, and wear cool
cotton clothes. Long pants are recommended due to briars and other overly friendly
vegetation. Some hikers have asked why we do 6 miles, in the heat this is usually a
comfortable amount. We can always adjust the hike depending on the heat and desires, but
we do want to make it a challenge, and more than a walk in the park. We will meet at
8:00 am in the parking lot behind the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) at I-45 North
and Greens Road. Look for the green Nissan Mini-van. To reach the parking lot, enter the
feeder off I-45 North, via the Greens Road exit, and then pass through the traffic signal
at Greens Rd. Turn right into the first strip center you come to (look for Brown Sugar's
Barbecue) and drive to the end of the strip center. The parking lot behind IHOP is on the
right. Contact Jane Prentiss at 713-201-5755 or lshttrailboss@yahoo.com for
additional details. Please supply your name and contact info should we need to make
changes.MORE

What
You Can Do to Keep the Christmas Mountains as Public Lands
As of November 6th, the 9,269-acre Christmas
Mountains parcel has received a reprieve from Texas Land Commissioner Jerry
Pattersons move to auction the property. There was an immense public outcry against
Pattersons plan to auction this Big Bend Country parcel to a private bidder. The
land was deeded to Texas in 1991 as a gift from The Conservation Fund with strict
provisions limiting its development in order to preserve its natural values. Protection of
the Christmas Mountains is critical for preservation of wildlife diversity in the Big Bend
area. (Dec 07)

Program: The Big Thicket at a Crossroads
Our August 7th general meeting speaker will be a representative
of the Big Thicket Association, the citizen group dedicated to the conservation of the Big
Thicket, a premier natural area of southeast Texas that is partially protected by the Big
Thicket National Preserve (BTNP). Not only is the preserve a biological crossroads of
species diversity, the preserve itself is at a crossroads in its history.
Fragmentation is a key threat facing this biological treasure .
Although the current size of the BTNP is approximately 100,000 acres, it is composed of 15
separate land and water units. Rep. Kevin Brady (R- The Woodlands) has filed H.R. 5891
which holds the promise of expanding the acreage of BTNP by up to another 100,000 acres
and connecting the disparate units of the preserve. The increase would be through sale and
donation of land. This would be a major accomplishment in strengthening the integrity of
the park structure. Also, Rep. Bradys bill aims to enhance ecotourism for Texas
communities connected to the preserve.
The Big Thicket Association will be updating us on these
current issues facing the Big Thicket in August. The BTA was founded in 1964. It was
instrumental in bringing the Big Thicket National Preserve to life and successfully pushed
for the establishment of Village Creek State Park in 1979. The BTA has steadily worked for
the expansion of the protected area, the interpretation of the preserve, and sponsorship
of scientific conferences to increase understanding of this Texas treasure.
Join us for a brief social period at 7:00 p.m. Our
program begins at 7:30. Central Presbyterian Church. 3788 Richmond at Timmons.
