July Hike Visits Lake Conroe and Stubblefield Area
July 11 (Sat) - On Saturday, July 11, 2009, the Houston Sierra Club will hike along Lake Conroe to the Stubblefield Recreation Area on the Lone Star Hiking Trail (LSHT) in Sam Houston National Forest. The hike will be approximately 7 miles. The shoreline of Lake Conroe is very scenic and we will enjoy its beauty as we hike. Hiking time should be about 4-5 hours. Bring your daypack, water, snacks or a lunch, hiking shoes, cameras, and field guides, and clothes to fit the weather.  We will meet at 8:00 a.m. in the parking lot behind the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) at I-45 North and Greens Road. Look for the green Nissan mini-van!   To get to the parking lot, enter the feeder off I-45 North via the Greens Road exit and then pass through the traffic signal at Greens Road. Turn right into the first strip center you come to (look for Brown Sugar’s Barbecue) and drive to the end of the strip center. The parking lot behind IHOP is on the right.  Call Jane Prentiss at 713-201-5755 or email her at lshttrailboss@yahoo.com so that your name and phone number can be taken. The information will be used in case the hike is canceled due to inclement weather.

Big Thicket National Preserve Celebrates 35th Anniversary This Year
On October 11, 1974, President Gerald Ford signed a bill into law (Public Law 93-439) that created Big Thicket National Preserve (BTNP). This year is the 35th anniversary of that historic day. As they say in the country "A lot of water has flowed under that bridge" since that day. Today, Texans and the People of the United States have a real natural treasure which is finally starting to get its due. Let the birthday party begin!!!  (July/Aug 09)

Sierra Club Files Lawsuit on Proposed Grand Parkway Segment E
On March 9, 2009, the Sierra Club filed a lawsuit in federal district court in Houston against the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Texas Transportation Commission (TTC) due to the impacts that the proposed Grand Parkway (GP), Segment E, may have on the Houston environment. A lawsuit is an expensive, time consuming, and difficult strategy that is taken only as a last resort after weighing the situation carefully. We are now at that last resort with the proposed GP. July Program:  Sustainable Development Plan for the Upper Texas Coast

Hurricane Ike provided a valuable lesson on the vulnerability of the upper Texas coast to natural hazards. But, long before Ike the area was facing serious problems with coastal erosion and habitat loss, due to both natural and human influence. Policy makers continue to search for panaceas to these problems, the Ike Dike being the latest suggestion. But, there are no quick fixes to combat the forces of nature and the situation will only worsen in the next few decades as the rate of sea-level rise increases and sediment supply remains minimal. Rice University is currently engaged in a sustainable development plan for the upper Texas coast that relies on a strong scientific framework for predicting future coastal change. This plan attempts to preserve natural habitats while at the same time offering socially and economically attractive alternatives to the "business as usual" approach to development on the island. This presentation is by John B. Anderson, who holds the W. Maurice Ewing Professorship in Oceanography at Rice University.

Join us for a brief social period at 7:00 p.m.  Our program begins at 7:30.  Pecore Hall of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 1805 West Alabama.  Houston, TX.

Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness
August 8-16 (Sat-Sun) Join us to explore this spectacular wilderness on the Montana-Wyoming border, just north of Yellowstone National Park. We will visit the Lake Plateau district south of Big Timber, Montana, in this weeklong and strenuous backpacking trip. Its beautiful scenery, combined with the extensive amount of open country that lies above timberline, creates wonderful hiking conditions both on and off trail. The trip includes the spectacular Columbine Pass at 10,000 ft altitude. A layover day is planned to rest, fish, or take advantage of some of the abundant side trip opportunities in this gorgeous, lake-riddled plateau. Water is abundant and we plan to camp every day near a lake. Be aware that this is Grizzly Bear country, and the appropriate precautions need to be taken to prevent midnight visitors, or unexpected encounters in the trail. We will depart Houston for Billings on August the 8th, get vans and last minute provisions and drive to the trailhead at Rick Park Campground. Return to Houston will be on Sunday, August 16th. For more details contact Gus Cei at 713-962-5813 or guscei@yahoo.com.   Status:   Space Available
