Fall
anywhere in East Texas is always beautiful, and indeed
the 705-acre recreational area in Jasper and Tyler
Counties between Woodville and Jasper on 15,000 acre
B. A. Steinhagen Reservoir is beautiful anytime of
the year, but especially in October.
The Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club is scheduling
a wide range of outdoor activities for everyone – including
kids and families – on Saturday and Sunday
of this October weekend.
There are plenty of interesting places in the area to visit
on your own either during the Celebration or on your way
to or from the event.
Friday, October 23rd: Campers with camp site registrations thru the Lone Star Chapter or TPWD check in at Park Headquarters and get your assigned camp site.
5:00 PM - REGISTRATION at the Group Building. Sign up for hikes and outings for Saturday.
Socialize with other Sierrans and dinner on your own.
Saturday, October 24th:
Campers with camp site registrations thru the Lone Star Chapter check in at Park Headquarters and get your assigned camp site.
8:00 AM until 12:00 Noon: Continued Late Registration at
the Group Building.
Chapter Hikes and Outings: Sign up at the Group Building from 8:00 AM until 9:00 AM.
Hikers be prepared to meet at the Group Building and leave
on the outings by 9:00 AM. HIKE Number ONE - Birding walk
in the Park beginning at the Group Building at 9:00
AM until approximately noon. Bring you binoculars. Easy Hike. HIKE Number TWO - Meet at the
Group Building at 9:00 AM and be prepared to car pool or
caravan to trail head. This is a short moderate hike. Bring
water. The group should be back at the Park for lunch on
your own. HIKE Number THREE - Meet at
the Group Building and be prepared to leave by 9:00 AM by
car pool or caravan to the trail head. This is an all day
hike so bring your lunch. Estimated time including driving
about 6 hours.
ON YOU OWN: There are many hikes in the Park, the nearby
Big Thicket National Preserve and other nature areas. Trail
maps and directions will be available at the Group Building.
Enjoy the East Texas Piney Woods.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: There are canoe rentals for canoeing on the Neches River and Village Creek. There are also canoe rentals thru at Martin Dies Jr. State Park. Check with the Park Headquarters. The local outfitters are:
SATURDAY EVENING, OCTOBER 24TH: DINNER will
be served from 6:30 to 8:00 PM AT THE GROUP BUILDING: Registration includes a great BBQ brisket meal by D'Lish Catering from Woodville. Vegetarian option upon request.
After Dinner PROGRAM in the GROUP DINING HALL:
Following the Barbeque, Wendel Withrow will give the
lowdown on the Best Tent Camping in Texas.
Richard Donovan – story teller and author – who will regale us with “Tales
of the Wild Neches”, the history and the legends of East Texas.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 25TH:
Enjoy the park on
your own with hikes and birding. You will only be a short
distance from the The Big Thicket National
Preserve Visitor Center. Drop by for a visit and a hike
on your way home. Directions will be available at the Group
Building.
CANOE/KAYAK ON YOUR OWN:
Bring your own canoe or kayak or rent. Beginners or novices can enjoy paddling along the shore. Paddlers into the main Reservoir should have maps, compass, and good directions as it is easy to get lost.

East Texas Barbeque.
