Regular Public Meeting
September 17, 2002

Meeting Opening:

Chair Don Dowdey opened the meeting at 7 p.m. in room 309 of Lawrence Hall at Sul Ross State University. There were 35 present.

Announcements

Voter registration postage paid postcards are available.

The Lone Star Chapter plans a radioactive waste conference in Austin in November as a follow up from last summer's conference. Funding for attending will be available from both the Lone Star Chapter and the Big Bend Regional Sierra Club

The Bravo study is now pushed back about 4 months and we are expecting a draft in December and final report shortly after that.

The alternative energy report "Renewable Resources: the New Texas Energy Powerhouse" by Public Citizen and the SEED Coalition is available on the web from www.seedcoalition.org/learn.renew.goal.htm . This report gives detailed information on West Texas wind farms, including jobs created, taxes paid, etc. In 2001, Texas built more wind power than had been built in the entire country in any other year.

Barbara Walker urged the use of cloth bags at the grocery store to prevent the current overuse of plastic bags and their dispersal throughout the landscape.

Program:

Sharon Yarborough used overhead illustrations and slides, by Petei Zelazny, to accompany her report on "Ferns and Fern Allies of the Trans Pecos." Her book, co-authored with Michael Powell, was available for purchase at a reduced price. A "fern walk" is scheduled for October 19 at CDRI.

Brief Business Meeting:

In the absence of the secretary Martha Floro kept a report of the meeting. The minutes of the May 21st meeting were distributed and motion passed to accept Membership forms are available. The club will be selling calendars again this year. There was no treasurer's report due to Ginny Campbell's absence
