outings leadership training (basic) - 2009

class dates: march 1st

San Juan Mts. Trip

The Austin Sierra Club is always interested in training new leaders to assist with our growing outings program. Any club member with outdoor skills, a knack for leadership, and an interest in helping others explore the wonders of the outdoors is welcome to attend this training and to join the Outings group. Cost for this one day course: $25 - tuition is refunded after you lead five outings for the club. The curriculum for the course is listed below. Contact Outings Becky Patterson at or Chuck Byrd at to register or for more information.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

The BASIC course is a one day class that prepares leaders for leading local day hikes and hikes that do not require food and/or transportation logistics. Students must complete the training class (this class), complete a Wilderness First Aid class, complete a CPR class and serve as an apprentice leader on at least two local day trips before they will be fully certified to lead a day trip solo or as a trip leader. A more advanced class, INTERMEDIATE Outings Leader Training, is required for leaders who wish to continue their leadership training in order to lead more extensive major fund-raising outings and outings which involve meal organization/preparation and travel logistics as well as the much more extensive planning and logistics involved in longer trips. INTERMEDIATE OLT classes will be offered as class demand indicates.

TRAINING INSTRUCTORS:
  • Becky Patterson................................................278-0360
