outings leadership training - 2007

class dates: saturday, january 27th and sunday, january 28th

San Juan Mts. Trip

The Austin Sierra Club is always interested in training new leaders to assist with our growing outings program. Any club member with outdoor skills, a knack for leadership, and an interest in helping others explore the wonders of the outdoors is welcome to attend this training and to join the Outings group. Cost for this one and one-half day course: $30 - tuition is refunded after you lead five outings for the club. The curriculum for the course is listed below. Contact Outings Becky Patterson at rpatterson16@austin.rr.com or Chuck Byrd at cbyrd4@austin.rr.com to register or for more information.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

The INTERMEDIATE course is the full, 1 1/2 day class and prepares leaders for more extensive and demanding major trips and fund-raisers. The class is structured so that BASIC class students (leaders interested only in leading local and day trips) need only stay for the first part of the class. (Discuss this option with Chuck or Becky) For both BASIC and INTERMEDIATE certification, students must complete the training class (this class), complete a Wilderness First Aid class, complete a CPR class and serve as an apprentice leader on at least two trips (local trips for BASIC, major trips for INTERMEDIATE) before they will be fully certified to lead a trip solo or as a trip leader.

TRAINING INSTRUCTORS:
  • Becky Patterson................................................278-0360
  • Chuck Byrd ......................................................292-6985

CLASS COST: $30.00
This charge covers the cost of reproduction of materials and handouts in addition to the cost of all provided meals. Tuition cost will be refunded to participants who continue with the program and lead five Sierra Club outings within one year of taking the leadership training class.

First Aid and CPR certification

The Outings Leadership Training course DOES NOT include two components that are required before leaders are qualified for leading Sierra Club trips. Those components are a WILDERNESS FIRST AID course and AN ADULT CPR course. Additional information about available FIRST AID and CPR classes can be found by following this link: FIRST AID LINKS
