Program Topic: No Program, Annual Picnic

Location: Zilker Rock Garden
(see MAP )

Time: 6:30 PM

Join us on July 7th for the Austin Sierra Club’s annual picnic in Zilker Park. Bring a tasty dish to share and enjoy the company of the Sierra Club folks in the attractive, tree-shaded picnic area of the Zilker Rock garden picnic area (located on the hill in front of the Barton Springs parking lot and bath house – on the other side of the hill from the outdoor theatre). The picnic begins at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, July 7, and ends around 10:00 pm. Please note that alcoholic beverages are not permitted at this picnic location. The Outings Committee will provide the club’s reusable plates, cups, glasses and eating utensils and will do the dishes.

August 4—Continental Conservation of an Iconic Migratory Insect: the Monarch Butterfly

Presenter: Mike Quinn, President, Austin Butterfly Forum

Mike Quinn will discuss the life history of the majestic monarch butterfly, as well as threats and hopes for the monarch both north and south of the border. Quinn has a master's degree in entomology from TAMU and was the invertebrate biologist for Texas Parks & Wildlife for eight years.

September 1—Growing Organic Food Locally

Presenter: John Dromgoole, owner, The Natural Gardener

Join us for a special evening with Austin’s very own guru of organic gardening, John Dromgoole. John will discuss the advantages of growing food locally using organic techniques. For 27 years, John has hosted America’s longest continuously running organic gardening radio talk show on 590 KLBJ. His nursery is a three-time winner of Today’s Garden Center’s “Revolutionary 100 Garden Centers.” In 2008, The Natural Gardener was honored with the national award of “Innovative Garden Center of the Year” by Garden Center Magazine.

October 6—The Rainforest Partnership

Presenter: Niyanta Spelman, Executive Director

The Rainforest Partnership is an Austin based nonprofit corporation dedicated to protecting tropical rainforests from deforestation in collaboration with local communities, and creating a connection between those communities and communities in the U.S. in order to raise public awareness of the role of rainforests in climate protection. Its vision is a world in which we all recognize our individual and collective responsibility to preserve and maintain global resources by working together for the common good.

The Austin Regional Group now meets on the first Tuesday of every month (except holidays) in the Auditorium of the Texas State Teachers Association building (TSTA) at 12th Street and Lavaca. All general meetings are open to members and non-members alike. Please join us for an activists' letter writing session prior to the meeting. From 6:30 until 7:00 PM we will have materials and information available so that you can write letters to public officials on important conservation topics at the local, national and international level. Get involved and take action with a quick letter before the meeting!

  • Doors open at 6:15 for outings sign-up and letter-writing;
