The Austin Sierra Club Outings Committee is always interested in recruiting members to become Outings Leaders. If you are a mature, responsible, caring individual with strong leadership skills and a desire to help others learn about and appreciate the wild areas of our planet, come on, be a volunteer outings leader!

Thanks to all the participants in the January 2007 Outings Leadership training class. Left to right: Taylor Martin, Carolyn Peterson, Glenn Hathaway, Becky Patterson (Outings Chair) and Elena Rivera. The class was a great start and we look forward to the creatitvity and initiative that these new leaders will bring to the Austin Group. Congratulations, Outings Leaders!

Outings Leadership classes are held yearly, usually in late January or early February. For an idea of what is covered and the time involved in qualifying to be an Outings Leader, please follow the link below: 2009 LEADER CLASS.

Please email Chuck at for additional information, expressions of interest or to be placed on the email notification list for the next outings leader training class.

Trailhead talk, Big Bend

Outings Leaders must be:

  • Active Sierra Club members in good standing;
  • Certified through the Austin Leadership training program or equivalent;
  • Certified in Wilderness First Aid;
  • Certified in CPR;
  • Experienced as a leader trainee.

Leadership Training courses are offered by the Austin Sierra Club Outings Committee once a year, normally in the early Spring (January or February). Participants are then asked to assist more experienced Outings Leaders for several trips as a trainee. Wilderness First Aid and CPR training are available from several acceptable local sources (see links on this page for details and schedules).

Info on WILDERNESS FIRST AID classes
Several people have asked about the Wilderness First Aid component of the training. While the course we offer covers the contents of the First Aid kits owned by the Club, we do not teach Wilderness First Aid as part of the course. You are required to take a Wilderness First Aid course and a CPR certification class before leading an outing (you can co-lead with a qualified leader any time after taking the leadership training course, but you must be Wilderness First Aid/CPR qualified to solo.)

how do I start?

Prospective leaders should start by participating in both local outings and major trips to see how the Austin Group runs outings (procedures and guidelines vary from group to group). Volunteer to help the outing leader with some of the necessary tasks and let the leader know you are interested in outings leadership.

Attend the monthly Outings Committee meetings and learn how outings are planned and put on the Outings Calendar (contact the Outings Chair, Becky Patterson at for the date of the next Outings Committee meeting.)

Sign up for the next Outings Leadership Training course in the early Spring.
